چکیده

Abstract. According to Modern-Era Retrospective Research Analysis for and Applications (MERRA-2) temperature wind datasets in 2019, this study presents the global variations eastward-propagating wavenumber 1 (E1), 2 (E2), 3 (E3) 4 (E4) planetary waves (PWs) their diagnostic results polar middle atmosphere. We clearly demonstrate eastward wave modes exist during winter periods with westward background both hemispheres. The maximum amplitudes Southern Hemisphere (SH) are slightly larger lie lower than those Northern (NH). Moreover, perturbations peak at latitudes smaller as increases. period of E1 mode varies between 3–5 d hemispheres, while E2 is longer NH (∼ 48 h) SH 40 h). E3 ∼ 30 h NH, E4 24 h. Despite shortening increase wavenumber, mean phase speeds relatively stable, 53, 58, 55 52 m/s 70∘ E1, E2, E4, respectively. PWs occur earlier increasing zonal which agrees well seasonal critical layers generated by wind. Our analysis also indicates that flow instability upper stratosphere mesosphere might contribute amplification PWs.

High-Frequency Planetary Waves in the Polar Middle Atmosphere as Seen in a Data Assimilation System

The 4-day wave often dominates the large-scale wind, temperature, and constituent variability in the highlatitude Southern Hemisphere winter near the stratopause. This study examines the winter Southern Hemisphere vortex of 1998 using 4-times-daily output from a data assimilation system to focus on the polar 2-day, wavenumber-2 component of the 4-day wave. The data assimilation system products ...

An ozone-modified refractive index for vertically propagating planetary waves

[1] An ozone-modified refractive index (OMRI) is derived for vertically propagating planetary waves using a mechanistic model that couples quasigeostrophic potential vorticity and ozone volume mixing ratio. The OMRI clarifies how wave-induced heating due to ozone photochemistry, ozone transport, and Newtonian cooling (NC) combine to affect wave propagation, attenuation, and drag on the zonal me...

On the statistical detection of propagating waves in polar coronal holes

Context. Waves are important to the study of dynamical processes in coronal holes and the acceleration of the fast solar wind. A spectral time series was taken with the SUMER spectrometer on-board SoHO on 20 October 1996. The observations were obtained in the N iv 765 Å transition region line and the Ne viii 770 Å line of the low corona. Aims. We detect the presence of waves and study their cha...

On the statistical detection of propagating waves in polar coronal hole

Waves are important for the heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of the solar wind. We have examined a long spectral time series of a southern coronal hole observed on the 25th February 1997, with the SUMER spectrometer on-board SoHO. The observations were obtained in a transition region N iv 765 Å line and in a low coronal Ne viii 770 Å line. Our observations indicate the presence ...
